In this Family cinema post we suggest Elio, an animated film about a boy who feels out of place on Earth and dreams of being taken away by aliens. When he finally gets his wish, he is mistaken for the planet's ambassador and has to improvise.

Why it is worth watching together

Behind the space adventure are themes very close to primary school children: feeling different, losing loved ones, finding it hard to make friends, and the relationship with the adult who looks after him, who does not always know how to reach him.

Questions for after the film

  • Why do you think Elio wanted to go so far away?
  • Have you ever felt as if you didn't fit in somewhere? What helped you?
  • What makes Elio and his new friend stand by each other?
  • How does his relationship with his aunt change over the story?

An idea for home

Draw “our planet” together: the people, places and things that make each of us feel at home. It is a simple way of talking about belonging without an interrogation.

Remember there is no need to draw a lesson from every film. Sometimes it is enough to share it and listen to what stayed with them.
