Family cinema: Inside Out

Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust live inside Riley's head. A perfect film for starting to talk about emotions at home.

By GroWinApp

In this Family cinema post we suggest Inside Out. Riley is eleven and has to move to a new city. Inside her head, five emotions try to guide her through the change, and when Joy and Sadness get lost, everything spins out of control.

Why it is worth watching together

The film explains, in a very visual way, ideas that are hard to put into words: that every emotion has a purpose, that we cannot be happy all the time and that sadness helps us ask for help and draw closer to others.

Questions for afterwards

  • Which emotion did you like best? Why?
  • What is Sadness for in the film?
  • What happens to Riley when she tries to pretend everything is fine?
  • Which emotion is usually at the controls in your head when you go to school? And when you wake up?

Ideas for home

  • Draw the five emotions and say in which situations each one shows up.
  • Talk about a family “core memory”.
  • Use the characters in everyday life: “looks like Anger is in charge right now, doesn't it?”.

Recommended from age six. Older children and adults will find other layers, such as grieving for change.
