How does TikTok work? A quick guide for parents

What it is, why it is so addictive and what safety options it has. The bare minimum worth knowing before deciding whether your child should use it.

By GroWinApp

TikTok is a social network of short videos. When you open it, an endless stream of videos appears, chosen by an algorithm based on what each person watches for longest. This personalisation is what makes it so appealing, and also what makes it hard to put down.

Age

The minimum age to have an account is thirteen. So it is not designed for primary school children.

Main risks

  • Time. Endless scrolling makes you lose track of the clock.
  • Inappropriate content or dangerous challenges.
  • Contact with strangers and comments.
  • Comparison with unrealistic bodies and lives.
  • Privacy of what is posted.

Safety tools

  • Family Pairing. Links the adult's account to the child's to manage time, messages and content.
  • Private account. Only approved followers can see the videos.
  • Restricted mode to filter content.
  • Daily time limit.

Beyond the settings

No filter replaces conversation. It is worth looking at it together, asking what they like and why, and agreeing where and when it is used: outside the bedroom and well away from bedtime.

Apps change often; check the options from time to time.
